The 70 Series is a family of Toyota Land Cruiser models produced since 1984. It replaced the 25 year old 40 Series as the off-road model of the Land Cruiser line,
while the contemporary 60 Series (and later 80, 90, 100, 120, 150 and 200 Series) developed in more comfortable off-road passenger vehicles.
Despite the great changes in style and countless technological updates, the 70 Series was designed to retain the off-road capabilities and durability associated with the 40 Series.
The 70 Series was commercialized all over the world, except in countries such as India, United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Korea, where it was imported and put into commercial or private use.
As a celebration of Land Cruiser 70’s 30th anniversary, Toyota temporarily marketed the Land Cruiser 70 Series on the Japanese market for 12 months.
Originally, the model numbers 70 to 74 referred to the two-door versions with short to medium wheelbase. These were the successors to the 40 Series (such as the FJ40).
For a time (1987 to at least 1990), the BJ73 rigid bonnet was available on the Italian and Spanish market with a HR588 five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbodiesel VM – the “B” prefix was applied because the first 70 series four-cylinder diesel came with the 3B.
